it was a complaint that paula broadwell, the woman who wrote the biography of general peatry was was sending harassing e-mails to another woman that prompted the fbi to investigate. also we know from that source that the investigation led to the discovery of e-mails between broadwell and petraeus that indicated the affair. that second woman hasn't been identified and the official we spoke with didn't know the nature of that woman's relationship with the former director. but more details are coming out about the time line of events and when u.s. officials were notified of the circumstances of this investigation. senior u.s. intelligence official tells cnn the fbi informed the director of national intelligence, james clapper, about the investigation on tuesday night, election night, just as some polls were beginning to close, and that director clapper as a friend, colleague, fellow officer and admirer, urged petraeus to step down from his position. we know as well from that intelligence source that director clapper informed the white house about the investigation on wednesday, and then of cour

classified documents on the computer that belongs to paula broadwell. she is the woman who had an affair with the then cia david petraeus. there is nothing to indicate that these documents actually came from general petraeus himself. the general stepped down as the cia director last friday but questions remain about whether his once secret lover knew information she should not have known. prince, consider paula broadwell's comments during a speech in denver last month during which she spoke about the attack on our consulate in benghazi, libya. >> i don't know if a lot of you heard this but the cia annex had actually taken a couple of libyan militia members prisoner they think the attack on the consulate was to try to get these prisoners back. it's still being vetted. >> shepard: the cia spokesperson today said that did not happen. any suggestion that the agency is still in the detention business is uninformed and baseless. we're also now learning when this whole scandal began. this morning, a former top aide said the actual affair started last year. just two months after general petraeus

biography paula broadwell. another american is now getting caught up in the whole thing and that is the top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. turns out the pentagon is now investigating him as well for sending inappropriate e-mails to jill kelly. now, if you remember from yesterday, kelly is the same woman who sparked this whole investigation because petraeus' mistress paula broadwell was sending her e-mails. allen is saying he did nothing wrong and is maintaining his current position within the military. now, many are wondering why the fbi would get involved if this is nothing more than an affair. but we're now hearing fears of potential security leaks. in a speech at the university of denver broadwell suggested the libya attack was targeting a secret prison at the benghazi consulate. federal agents have been searching broadwell's home. late last night and into early this morning. not only did she have thousands of e-mails between her and petraeus detailing the affair. she also had classified ma

pentagon correspondent barbara starr. she's getting new information on paula broadwell. what are you learning, barbara? >> wolf, some really stunning new information. cnn has learned from two u.s. officials that paula broadwell's security clearance has been suspended. she is a serving reservist, if you will, with the u.s. army, a military intelligence analyst. as such, she would at least have a secret level security clearance. we are now told that security clearance suspended pending the outcome of several investigations. we went to the army to ask them for an official response. they will not say anything except the following. and let me read it to you. "appropriate actions with regard to this officer's clearance and access have been taken." the statement goes onto say "the army has been cooperating with federal law enforcement authorities in this matter. and those actions are ongoing." wolf, you will recall a couple of days ago the fbi went to broadwell's home. we all saw the video of fbi agents taking away boxes of material, computers. the discussion centering around what kind of c

an admonition to, quote, back off, came from paula broadwell. while combing through broadwell's e-mails they came upon david petraeus. let's stop it here and bring in suzanne -- suzanne kelly in washington, our intelligence correspondent. suzanne, a lot of ground to cover here. we have this video that has surfaced of paula broadwell, last month, speaking at the university of denver and she's speaking here as david petraeus' biographer about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. let's take a listen. >> i don't know if a lot of you heard this, but the cia an annex had taken a couple prisoner and they think the attack on the consulate was an attempt to get the prisoners back. that's still being vetted. >> where did she hear that? did it come from david petraeus and do we know if her claim was true, the cia was holding captives inside a consular annex in benghazi? >> right, ted. this raises serious issues. she clearly said in the video the information she was sharing on libya and the cia holding prisoners there hadn't been vetted. so that means she is sharing som

a report-- the only paula broadwell question i have -- two of them, actually. was this cia annex a detention, interrogation site as she suggested? she seemed confident when she said it. >> well, i tell you, everything you said about general petraeus is true. we were losing in iraq, he turned it around. he got us back on good footing in afghanistan that i think the president has made poor decisions on iraq and afghanistan, in spite of great military leadership. but general petraeus supposedly told the house intelligence and senate intelligence committee a couple of days after the attack, he thought it was the result of a radio. he needs to testify. secretary clinton needs to testify. august 15, ambassador stevens sent a cable from libya to the state department, to secretary clinton saying, we have identified 10 militia groups associated with al qaeda in benghazi, they are all over the place. if there is a coordinated attack, we can't defend the consulate. so she needs to account for why she did not grant the security request. we need to hear from all of these people. the way the c

in an extramarital affair with paula broadwell. she is his biographer. broadwell spent a year with petraeus in afghanistan interviewing him for the book she co-wrote about him. it's not clear whether broadwell is the woman with whom petraeus has admitted to having this affair that led to this resignation. the official says that the fbi counterintelligence unit investigated the tip to see if there was a potential security risk, whether petraeus could possibly be blackmailed. the official tells cnn there was no suggestion the fbi was investigating petraeus for any possible wrongdoing, but the concern, rather, was that he might be putting himself in a vulnerable position. >> we know that a lot of the questions from online that i've read, some of the comments on cnn.com, there's questions about the timing. let's start with what it comes after, the presidential election. what if we found out about that connection, if any, and why this comes just days after the election? >> reporter: well, that's a great question and i think a lot of those questions will be thrown at the white house, and they hav

uncovered by an fbi investigation into a series of e-mails sent by his biographer, paula broadwell, who was accused of sending harassing e-mails to another woman. that sparks an investigation that revealed her secret relationship with petraeus. but after looking at a recent speech she gave on the death of four americans in libya, people started wondering whether she and petraeus had shared any classified intel and whether she inadvertently spilled some of those secrets during her remarks. bill gross joins us live, what's your impression of this situation as it's playing out? >> well, it's certainly a very interesting situation, as you say. there's a joke going around on twitter that the french intelligence director resigned because he doesn't have an affair for six months. so the idea that an extramarital affair in itself would bring down the cia director is very isn't in my mind. there has to be more to the story. my guess is it has to do with internal cia politics. the agency's known to be using intelligence information to settle scores, or it could be related to the benghazi scandal.

david petraeus. the fbi is investigating whether the general's mistress, paula broadwell, may have revealed classified information, information she only had because of her relationship with the general. that is the question they're asking. good morning, everybody. i'm martha maccallum in "america's newsroom.". >> i'm gregg jarrett in for bill hemmer. that information may contradict information that general petraeus gave to congress just days later. martha: doug luzader joins us live with this report from washington. good morning, doug. >> reporter: good morning, guys. at a very basic level this is the store of an affair between general david petraeus and his biographer paula broad well. it gets complicated. there may be national security implication including into the broad investigation into the consulate in benghazi on september 11th. there is no question she would have had prime access to one. key players. she made a couple of public appearances to talk about that. that was at the university of denver, her alma mater last month where she spoke about the benghazi attack. this was

there is an ongoing leak investigation, which is why fbi agents were searching paula broadwell's home. so he's left himself some room there. he mentioned the protocols and withholding judgment. what he's referencing is a 2007 attorney general memo that talks about communications between the white house and the justice department on criminal investigations. that they're supposed to be between the attorney general and the deputy attorney general, with the white house counsel, and the deputy white house counsel. we don't know those communications take place and, by the way, this memo, says the most important thing is that there should be no inhibition to those communications when it affects national security or espionage. which means if somebody was hiding behind this memo to not tell the white house, they probably were wrong. and i think the president is waiting -- withholding judgment, but likely they should have told him. >> all right, everybody stand by. because there is a lot more to do, to discuss including the president, what i thought the president's very generous comments to mitt romney, his
